U2Demo Newsletter #2: From Design to Deployment

The second U2Demo newsletter marks a new stage for the Horizon Europe project as it shifts from high‑level design to hands‑on implementation. This issue offers a snapshot of the rapid progress across the technical work packages, evolving pilot activities, and growing visibility of U2Demo in Europe and beyond.

Governance Takes Centre Stage

Prof. Lucila de Almeida (EUI/FSR) highlights why governance will be crucial for scaling energy sharing across Europe. Her reflections show how national differences in roles, responsibilities, and user journeys shape participation—setting the tone for U2Demo’s next development phase.

Technical Work Packages Advancing Rapidly

The project is moving steadily from concepts to operational tools. WP1 has concludedWP2 is nearing completion, and work across WP3 and WP4 is now focused on building the open‑source platform and algorithms that will support peer‑to‑peer energy sharing. The newsletter shares a first look at how these components are coming together.

Pilot Spotlight: Community Engagement in Belgium

In Otterbeek (Mechelen), Klimaan hosted an Energy Café to help residents navigate solar self‑consumption, billing, and upcoming energy‑sharing tools. With nearly 1,800 solar panels already installed, the event highlights how local engagement remains essential as the pilot moves toward real‑world testing.

Research and Industry Presence Growing

U2Demo has been showcased at several international events, including UNICAMP in Brazil, a Special Session at IEEE PES ISGT Europe, and ENLIT Europe 2025. These appearances underline the project’s growing role in Europe’s evolving energy‑innovation landscape.

Partner Spotlights & Regulatory Insights

New Partner Spotlights highlight the work of TNO and VITO, two organisations driving U2Demo’s research and technical development. This edition also revisits a recent webinar on Europe’s regulatory landscape for energy sharing, offering insights into national differences that will shape future tools and pilots.

General Assembly & European Developments

The consortium’s meeting in Bratislava provided a project‑wide checkpoint and included a visit to the local municipal energy community. The newsletter also covers the launch of the European Commission’s €1 million prize for innovative energy‑community governance — an initiative closely aligned with U2Demo’s objectives.

Looking Ahead

Newsletter #2 offers readers a concise window into U2Demo’s progress as the project advances toward real‑world demonstrations. The full edition dives deeper into each story and outlines what’s coming next for Europe’s emerging energy‑sharing ecosystem.
