We are pleased to announce the release of the third U2Demo project newsletter, highlighting the latest scientific achievements, stakeholder engagement activities, and project milestones as U2Demo moves steadily towards the demonstration phase.
As the project reaches the halfway point, partners across Europe continue to develop, integrate, and validate innovative solutions for peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading and energy sharing, helping pave the way for more inclusive, resilient, and citizen-centred energy systems.
What’s Inside Newsletter #3?
U2Demo Reaches a Key Milestone
Following the successful completion of its first reporting period, U2Demo enters a new phase focused on platform integration, demonstration preparation, and the validation of its technical solutions. The newsletter provides an overview of the project’s progress and the next steps towards real-world deployment.
New Publications and Public Deliverables
This edition highlights a new scientific publication on the optimization of Renewable Energy Communities, demonstrating how smart coordination of flexible demand, electric vehicles, and vehicle-to-grid technologies can improve self-sufficiency and reduce energy costs.
In addition the newsletter introduces the first set of public U2Demo deliverables, covering topics such as energy-sharing regulation, consumer participation, market design, platform architecture, cybersecurity, data privacy, and standardization.
U2Demo Research on Stage
Recent scientific contributions were presented at two leading international conferences:
- CIRED 2026, where researchers from INESC-ID showcased the PyECOM Frontend, a new no-code interface for energy community optimization.
- PSCC 2026, where U2Demo contributor AnĂbal Sanjab presented research on TSO-DSO coordination and flexibility management in increasingly decentralized energy systems.
These presentations highlight the project’s growing contribution to Europe’s energy research landscape.
Partner Spotlight: Exaion & Energy Web
This issue shines a spotlight on Exaion and Energy Web, two partners helping build the digital foundations of U2Demo. Their expertise in blockchain technologies, interoperability, traceability, and secure digital infrastructure supports the development of a scalable and trustworthy ecosystem for future energy communities.
Insights from the Second U24U Webinar
The second webinar in the U24U series explored how different energy-sharing models and flexibility mechanisms can support the development of energy communities across Europe.
The session also examined a range of approaches, from internal pricing and auction-based systems to fully decentralized peer-to-peer trading models, highlighting both opportunities and challenges for future implementation.
New Webinar Hub and YouTube Channel
To make project knowledge more accessible, U2Demo has launched a new Webinars & Insights Hub, bringing together recordings, presentations, and expert insights from the project’s webinar series.
The project has launched an official YouTube channel, where stakeholders can access webinars, project presentations, and future video content.
Strengthening European Collaboration
The newsletter also looks back at several important events, including:
- U2Demo’s General Assembly in Karlsruhe
- BRIDGE General Assembly 2026
- European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2026
These activities continue to strengthen collaboration between researchers, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and energy communities across Europe.
U2Demo in the Spotlight
Project Coordinator Hugo Morais recently featured in both the ENLIT podcast and the Portuguese Plug-IN podcast. The discussions focused on the future of energy sharing, smart energy systems, digitalization, and direct current technologies.
