Join the U2Demo Consortium and Policy Experts on 20 March 2026
As the energy transition accelerates, local energy sharing and peer-to-peer (P2P) trading are becoming a cornerstone of decentralized, community-led energy systems. At the same time, many questions remain. What forms can local energy sharing take? How can these models support both individual and collective flexibility? And what opportunities and challenges arise when implementing them?
We invite you to a in-depth webinar hosted by VITO in collaboration with the U2Demo Horizon Europe project:
Date: Friday, 20 March 2026
Time: 10:00–12:00 CEST

The webinar will be recorded and made available afterwards.
About the Webinar
Energy communities (ECs) are gaining prominence in Europe and globally due to their potential to expand local renewable generation, self-consumption, and storage, enabled by decentralized energy sharing. Their large-scale impact, however, depends on well-designed local sharing and trading arrangements that make effective use of local resources.
Over the past years, numerous local energy sharing, trading, and exchange schemes have been tested in pilots, the resulting proliferation of concepts and terminology has created an inconsistent landscape, complicating model classification and hindering systematic assessment of benefits, limitations, and operational feasibility.
This webinar addresses this gap by presenting a unified classification framework for local energy sharing and trading models, reflecting the most common approaches in operational ECs and pilot projects. It will assess these architectures in terms of their ability to facilitate local energy exchange, reduce costs for end consumers, and enable ECs to provide flexibility services.
The session will feature expert presentations based on model implementation and quantitative analyses as part of the U2Demo project, followed by a panel discussion with stakeholders from system operation (DSOs), retail and utilities, energy communities, research, and policy.
Overall, the webinar will highlight key opportunities and challenges for local energy sharing and flexibility provision by energy communities.

Why It Matters
This event is part of U2Demo’s mission to support efficient and transparent energy transitions across Europe. By introducing, classifying, and analyzing different local energy sharing models, the webinar aims to highlight the opportunities and challenges of local energy sharing and local flexibility provision from energy communities.
