Country: the Netherlands

Den Haag is a leader in sustainability and innovation, actively advancing smart city solutions and climate-neutral goals.

Role under the Project

Dutch pilot partner. The Living Lab Scheveningen, a flagship program of The Hague’s Smart City initiatives, addresses societal challenges such as environment, safety, and sustainability in public spaces. Its main energy-focused project is the Energy Community (EC) at the beachside harbor. Since last year, collaboration with the local DSO, STEDIN, has enabled in-depth studies on grid factors and testing flexibility services. A cooperative has been established to manage the grid and its value streams, laying the foundation for the adoption of a decentralised platform.

The pilot focuses on open-source and decentralised technologies, aligning with The Hague’s status as part of the 100 Climate Neutral & Smart Cities EU mission. Privacy protection, security, and innovative technologies like edge computing, federated learning, and wallet systems are key priorities.
