We’re excited to announce the release of U2Demo’s first newsletter, showcasing the progress and ambition behind this Horizon Europe project driving innovation in peer-to-peer (P2P) energy sharing, community energy systems, and open-source platforms for the energy transition.
Launched in September 2024, U2Demo unites 19 partners from 8 European countries to develop scalable, decentralized energy solutions that empower citizens, local communities, and energy cooperatives across Europe.

The first issue highlights milestones from U2Demo’s first year and sets the stage for upcoming pilot demonstrations and regulatory engagement. Key highlights include:
Work Packages in Action
Seven of the project’s eight work packages are already active — covering everything from system architecture and data exchange to user engagement and policy frameworks. The project is laying the groundwork for interoperable, technology-neutral energy sharing platforms.
Local Energy Pilots Across Europe
U2Demo is testing its solutions across four diverse pilot sites:
- Netherlands (Scheveningen): Exploring decentralized, privacy-preserving P2P energy trading.
- Italy (Vallevignale): Sharing solar and EV infrastructure between residential buildings.
- Belgium (Mechelen): Engaging social housing residents through gamified energy sharing.
- Portugal (Valverde): Comparing trading algorithms within a rural renewable energy community.
Each pilot contributes to validating the replicability and scalability of U2Demo’s tools in real-world energy communities.
Research Driving the Energy Transition
Our academic partners have published early findings on:
- Solar forecasting with limited historical data
- Explainable AI for energy systems
- Decentralized EV-based energy trading

Community-Led Success: Otterbeek Wins EU Award
We’re proud to highlight the Otterbeek Project, led by Klimaan, which won the EU Local Energy Action Award 2025. Supported by U2Demo’s inclusive tools, the project delivers affordable solar energy to 200 social housing units and showcases the power of citizen-financed, community-driven energy innovation.
